Uranium- series dating of peat from central and northern europe

Uranium uptake history, open-system behaviour and uranium-series ages of fossil Tridacna gigas from Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea. Ayling, Bridget F. Molluscs incorporate negligible uranium into their skeleton while they are living, with any uranium uptake occurring post-mortem. As such, closed-system U- series dating of molluscs is unlikely to provide reliable age constraints for marine deposits. Even the application of open-system U- series modelling is challenging, because uranium uptake and loss histories can affect time-integrated uranium distributions and are difficult to constrain. Within each fossil Tridacna specimen, marked differences in uranium concentrations are observed across the three Tridacna growth zones outer, inner, hinge , with the outer and hinge zones being relatively enriched. In addition to uptake of uranium , loss of uranium appears prevalent, especially in the MIS 11 specimens. A complex, multi-stage uptake and loss history is interpreted for the fossil Tridacna and we demonstrate that they cannot provide independent, reliable geochronological controls on the timing of past reef growth at Huon Peninsula. Uranium-series dating of coral samples from raised marine terrace deposits between 1. The stratigraphy and ages of marine units near the El Coyote Arroyo indicate the presence of two high stands of the sea during the last interglacial or oxygen isotope substage 5e at about ka and ka.

Large changes in hydroclimate in the Neotropics implied by proxy evidence, such as during the Little Ice Age, have been attributed to meridional shifts of the intertropical convergence zone ITCZ , although alternative modes of ITCZ variability have also been suggested.

Here, we use seasonally resolved stalagmite rainfall proxy data from the modern northern limit of the ITCZ in southern Belize, combined with records from across the Neotropics and subtropics, to fingerprint ITCZ variability during the Common Era. Our data are consistent with models that suggest ITCZ expansion and weakening during globally cold climate intervals and contraction and intensification during global warmth.

As a result, regions currently in the margins of the ITCZ in both hemispheres are likely transitioning to more arid and highly variable conditions, aggravating current trends of increased social unrest and mass migration.

We are now applying that technique to the last glaciation of the Outer Hebrides. The work has received wide attention and demonstrated that storm waves on deep water coasts can reach as high as 50 m a.

Recent work has focused on using boulder size as a proxy for estimating storm wave current velocities on shore platforms.
